The fact remains that we are climbing out of it, but (Economics 101) you don't cut federal spending too sharply or you throw the country back into recession.
PapaFox - March 31, 2013, 4:05 am
FFS, PLEASE learn the difference between DEBT and DEFICIT. Bush's 2 unfunded wars combined with those ridiculous tax breaks practically bankrupted the country, and we'll be paying for his screwups for a decade or longer.

Nice obfuscation with facts. Your number is the annual budget deficit, however, O has run up >25% of the total budget deficit which now exceeds 100% of the U.S. GDP. Facts. The world GDP is 70T in 2011, the US GDP was 14.99T. The current deficit

if a company trades in hundreds of billions of dollars worth of stock, but it makes only 100k profit, its taxes only affect that 100k. that is how all companies should be taxed. sales/payroll taxes hurt the economy and should be immediately eliminated.
terroraustralis - May 5, 2013, 2:09 am
profit taxes dont increase costs, because they only affect the profit after all workers have been paid and all costs have been accounted for. profit taxes are the ONLY kind of tax that should ever be levied against any company.
terroraustralis - May 5, 2013, 2:07 am
sales taxes increase costs, and payroll taxes increase costs, because those taxes are stupid and should be eliminated. they hurt corporations and force them to rise the prices of their goods. but profit taxes are different.
StoneTools - May 3, 2013, 7:42 pm
It also hurts the consumer because corporations raise the price of goods to make up for an increase in costs
terroraustralis - May 3, 2013, 2:48 pm
taxing profits doesnt hurt the companies ability to run, it hurts the shareholder dividends. if people lose their jobs because their employer is having a larger share of its profits taxed, its because the employer is a scumbag.
terroraustralis - May 3, 2013, 2:46 pm
i beleive its more focused on the POLICIES that caused it, not the people. everyone has their own stupid a** solutions, but what this poster is saying, is we should hit "UNDO" on the bush tax cuts and corporate tax breaks.

Cut federal spending too fast and you end up sparking a recession.
Texmil - March 6, 2013, 10:38 pm
Crankyhead- Rarely agree but good explanation. As for Fox- the rate of reduction is sophistry. When O spent so much the first year, no where to go but down and fast. The debt is still increasing at a great rate.
crankyhead - March 6, 2013, 6:39 pm
...defecit is shrinking, and that is good news indeed, for anyone who cares about paying down the debt.
crankyhead - March 6, 2013, 6:39 pm
Regardless of how large or small the defecit is, the debt continues to grow. But the first step in paying off the debt, is to get from a defecit to a surplus. I don't know how to express that in simpler terms, apologies. Still, the fact remains, the...
crankyhead - March 6, 2013, 6:37 pm
...a surplus exists. Once a surplus exists, then you can use the surplus money, to pay off the debt, and start shrinking the debt. Clear?
crankyhead - March 6, 2013, 6:36 pm
When you are spending money faster than you are making it, that is called a defecit. The defecit is shrinking. When/if the defecit reaches zero, and starts into the positive numbers, then you have a surplus. The debt will continue to grow, until...
RonE - March 6, 2013, 6:24 pm
See the federal spending? See the "federal deficit" Spending is out pacing "deficit" almost by triple. We are not decreasing. Yes, I do see the clock showing the "federal deficit" decreasing. Spending is up, money is down, and deficit lowers? No.
crankyhead - March 6, 2013, 6:19 pm
Should the trend continue, and the defecit become a surplus, then the federal government can start paying off the debt.
crankyhead - March 6, 2013, 6:18 pm

crankyhead - March 6, 2013, 6:17 pm
The national debt clock, does in fact, show the defecit shrinking.
PapaFox - March 6, 2013, 6:17 pm
What the country owes is debt. Spending in excess of funding is deficit. Two different things. For the past several years, the deficit has been falling at its fastest rate since the drawdown at the end of WWII. Any faster and we'd enter a recession.
RonE - March 6, 2013, 6:12 pm
Actually, I'm not confusing it at all. It was an on purpose reference to the fact that this country owes this much money. Since, it will never be paid back, especially under D/R leadership it is a deficit.
PapaFox - March 6, 2013, 6:08 pm
You're confusing debt with deficit. Two different things.
RonE - March 6, 2013, 5:57 pm
Not to pick a nit, but the National Debt Clock does not show the deficit lowering. It is increasing.
foxrecon19d - March 6, 2013, 6:55 am

PapaFox - November 23, 2012, 12:52 pm
Well, if you HONESTLY want an answer to that question, try reading the whole article at the site. In a word, shrinking the deficit faster would seriously affect the economy. (And BTW, it takes a while to recover out of the Bush recession.)
RetiredUSNChief - November 23, 2012, 11:51 am
I suppose when you run deficits in excess of a trillion dollars and then reduce the current deficit to the Bush era numbers you railed against, that does show dramatic improvement. Way to go! Now, how 'bout that debt?
PapaFox - November 23, 2012, 10:31 am
